Biographie
[edit] Mathieu Copeland (né en 1977, vit et travaille à Londres)Commissaire indépendant, Mathieu Copeland a entre autres organisé les expositions Soundtrack for an exhibition (Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon), A Spoken Word Exhibition, Expat Art Center (ICA, Londres, Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon, CAC Vilnius…), ou Meanwhile… across town avec Cerith Wyn Evans au Centre Point de Londres. Il publie en 2003 « Perfect Magazine », magazine imprimé en blanc sur blanc, et initie en 2002 la tournée des films « Anna Sanders Films World Tour » et l’ouvrage « Anna Sanders – the in-between ». www.mathieucopeland.netMathieu Copeland
[edit] Mai-Thu Perret's work for the Biennial takes shape against the backdrop of An Evening of the Book, an agit-prop play of 1924. Directed by Vitalii Zhemchuzhnyi, this piece of pro-book propaganda, with sets and costumes by Varvara Stepanova, took the form of an experiment in book-based artistic agitation for the masses, with the students of the Academy for Communist Education. Also to be noted is the parallel between this story and the present history book, as much formally – in the significance of their graphic style – as in this urge to write an ongoing story in the present tense. Just as An Evening of the Book presents the conflict between the heroes of prerevolutionary books and those of the new revolution, with all the characters emerging one by one from the pages of a giant book on the stage, this Biennial materialises in a book in which the history of the exhibition becomes the history of a history book (or a storybook). [edit] L’œuvre pensée pour la biennale par Mai-Thu Perret se trame avec en toile de fond ‘An Evening of the Book (une Soirée pour le Livre)’ (1924), une pièce de théâtre agit-prop. Mis en scène par Vitalii Zhemchuzhnyi, cette propagande pour le livre aux décors et costumes conçus par Varvara Stepanova s’organisait comme une expérimentation dans l’agitation artistique pour les masses par le livre avec des étudiants de l’Académie de l’Education Communiste. De plus, il est à noter le parallèle entre cette histoire et le présent livre d’histoire, autant formellement de par l’importance de leurs graphismes que dans cette volonté d’écrire au présent une histoire en cours. Tout comme ‘An Evening of the Book’ présente le conflit entre les héros des livres pré-révolutionnaire et ceux de la nouvelle révolution, les personnages sortant tous au fur et à mesure des pages d’un livre géant présent sur scène ; Cette biennale se matérialise dans un livre ou l’histoire de l’exposition devient l’histoire d’un livre d’histoire (d’histoires ?). Il nous reste à espérer que tout comme dans cette pièce des années vingt, l’écriture en cours voit la victoire revenir aux héros révolutionnaires.(...)
